Family of fallen Sergeant receives generous gift of mortgage paid for rest of year
ALEXANDRIA, Va. - The family of fallen Sergeant Mujahid Ramzziddin is getting a helping hand after such a devastating loss.
Sergeant Ramzziddin was a Prince George's County police officer who was shot and killed while off duty helping his neighbor with a domestic situation last month.
Area businessman, Mike Tikoyan, who owns NT Auto Body shop in Alexandria, Virginia has been watching the Ramziddin family's story and wanted to help in some way. He reached out to FOX 5 to get in touch with the grieving family.
On Thursday, he met with the sergeant's widow, Tammi Ramzziddin, and announced he will pay her mortgage for the rest of the year.
"We're all here to honor your late husband and bless you," said Tikoyan. He and Ramzziddin hugged and expressed thanks.
Dozens of police officers from Alexandria heard this was happening and came out to be there. They even lined up to give Tammi a hug and express their condolences.
While her husband was on the force in Prince George's County, the Alexandria officers make up much of the clientele at NT Autobody and when they heard what the owner was doing, they wanted to be there as well to show how in their words, "blue supports blue."
Tammi Ramzziddin says charity work was very important for both her and her husband. She does a lot of work with the homeless and was clearly touched to be on the receiving end of something like this.
Tikoyan says he's fortunate business is good these days and he is just happy to be able to help in some way.
"He really did the ultimate sacrifice. And Tammi didn't choose to be a Gold Star family or want to be a Gold Star family. But now it's our turn in return to support the family," he said.
Tammi Ramzziddin says she is grateful for the support.
"My husband was the breadwinner. He took care of, you know, our mortgage payment. For them to step up and to offer to do that is huge. It's huge and it takes some concern and worry off of me. My husband's mother has been living with us for the last couple of years. She's decided that she wants to remain, even though she's my mother-in-law, she is staying with me, so it helps, it helps a lot," she said.
Those who are looking to support the Ramzziddin family, police ask those to support the Prince George's County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge.
