ALEXANDRIA, Va. - A Fairfax County Public Schools teacher has been arrested after police found him in a vehicle in a parking lot with a 16-year-old student during the early morning hours on Sunday.
Michael Sweeney has been charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor -- a misdemeanor.
The 44-year-old is a technology information teacher at Walt Whitman Middle School in Alexandria. He has taught at the school since 2000. A Fairfax County Public Schools spokesperson said Sweeney was removed from the classroom and has been suspended without pay.
Police said officers were doing routine patrols when they spotted the suspicious car with Sweeney and the student inside at around 2 a.m. in an industrial parking lot off of Richmond Highway.
Police said the student is from Alexandria. She reportedly attends another Fairfax County Public School.
Parents were reportedly notified Monday night and police said there could be more charges and more victims.
Detectives from the Child Exploitation Unit are investigating the case.
