FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. - A high school in Fairfax County is receiving some high praise as one of the best in the nation, according to a new report.
U.S. News and World Report released its annual "Best High Schools" ranking and Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology of Fairfax County Public Schools came in at No. 10 on the list.
The school in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County uses a STEM-focused curriculum and offers advanced courses in areas such as DNA science, marine biology, automation and robotics, and features 15 specialized research labs.
Other notable schools in the region making the list included School Without Walls High School of DC Public Schools, which came in at No. 51, and Winston Churchill High of Montgomery County Public Schools in Potomac, which came in at No. 113.
BASIS Scottsdale, a charter school in Scottsdale, Arizona, was named the best high school in the country. Arizona boasted the top 5 schools in the nation and six of the top 10.
U.S. News and World Report said it compiled its rankings by calculating students who exceeded expectations, underserved students performing better than their state average, student graduation rates and students' preparedness for college-level work.
