Fairfax County police investigating nearly 80 tire and rim theft cases

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Thieves are swiping rims and tires off of vehicles across Northern Virginia. Fairfax County police are investigating nearly 80 cases and several happened in an Alexandria neighborhood in recent weeks.

One resident said their rims and tires were stolen twice while their car was reportedly parked near mailboxes in the 6100 block of Castletown Way.

We are told the Homeowners Association in this Alexandria neighborhood has alerted residents about the thefts impacting the area. It appears the thieves are targeting Honda vehicles and luxury cars.

"Just one morning, my husband woke up, looked out of the window and was confused. He was like, 'What is going on?' He saw my sister's car sitting outside and it was literally sitting on top of bricks," one Alexandria resident said. "All four of her tires, rims, everything were gone. They left the bolts sitting on the ground right beside the car."

Three weeks ago, police said they were alerted to a possible suspect in the area and saw him in a stolen car. Officers tried to stop the car and it drove over the grass to get away. Stop sticks were set up and stopped the car.

Police arrested 27-year-old Michael Roane, of Suitland, Maryland, and charged him with grand larceny, speed to elude and reckless driving along with other charges. He could face more charges if police are able to connect him to more thefts.

Police have surveillance video from at least one of the thefts that have happened in recent weeks and it is currently being reviewed.
