Police say one person has been killed and another has been hospitalized with serious injuries after an early morning crash in Fairfax County.

The crash was reported at about 2:40 a.m. along southbound Route 28 and Westfield Boulevard in the Chantilly area. Investigators said a 2015 BMW was traveling north in the southbound lane on Route 28 and struck a 2005 Acura TL.

Officials said 59-year-old Eliseo Ruiz of Chantilly, who was in the Acura, was rushed to the hospital but died from the injuries he suffered in the head-on collision.

Family members said Ruiz was on his way to work and took a quick detour to pick up a friend along the way.

Detectives said they were attempting to determine if drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash but stated their investigation into the cause of the crash was ongoing.

Authorities have asked anyone with information that could aid detectives in their investigation to call (866) 411-8477.
