DMV schools honored with National Blue Ribbon award

This week a number of schools in the D.C.-metro area were honored as 'National Blue Ribbon' award winners.

The Department of Education gives the annual awards for overall academic excellence, or progress in closing achievement gaps.

Locally, three schools received the honor in D.C. including Benjamin Stoddert Elementary School, KIPP DC Promise Academy Public Charter School, and School Without Walls High School.

There were also seven schools in Maryland, including Bannockburn Elementary School in Bethesda, Luxmanor Elementary School in Rockville, and eight in Virginia.

Blessed Sacrament in Alexandria found a creative way to share their news with their students during a special assembly.

Only 300 public and 49 private schools are honored each year nationwide. The full list of schools awarded around the country can be found online.

The Department of Education has more information about the award.
