Discarded smoking materials started deadly DC apartment fire: officials

Investigators say discarded smoking materials sparked a blaze at a apartment that killed a man in northwest D.C.

Investigators say discarded smoking materials sparked a blaze at an apartment that killed a man in northwest D.C.

The fire was reported around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 3100 block of 16th Street.

Firefighters rescued the man from the apartment and transported him to the hospital where he later died. Sprinklers helped extinguish and contain the fire.

D.C.’s fire prevention division will be in the neighborhood on Wednesday.
