DC's 3rd Walmart store opens near Fort Totten

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The third Wal-Mart store in the nation's capital is now open.

The Walmart Supercenter is located north of the Fort Totten Metro station and the Catholic University of America, near the Maryland border in northeast Washington.

Mayor Muriel Bowser was on hand for a ribbon-cutting as the store opened Wednesday morning.

Two years ago, Wal-Mart was the focus of a political fight over pay for low-wage workers in the District of Columbia. The company threatened not to build any stores in the city if the D.C. Council approved a law requiring big-box retailers to pay their employees at least $12.50 an hour. Then-mayor Vincent Gray vetoed the bill, and he and the council agreed to raise the District's minimum wage instead.
