DC Weather: New Year's Day Wind Advisory; wintry mix possible Sunday into Monday

Washington, D.C., and portions of Maryland and northern Virginia are under a New Year's Day Wind Advisory, with all eyes looking ahead to the possibility of snow by the end of the weekend into the beginning of the workweek.

FOX 5’s Taylor Grenda says gusts up to 50 mph are possible in parts of the area on Wednesday. The advisory will remain in effect until 7 p.m. The National Weather Service warns that gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects, and tree limbs could be taken down. Power outages may be possible, and the wind could make driving difficult. Extra caution is advised.

Grenda mentions that temperatures will dip as we head into the weekend. There is a slight chance of snow showers on Friday, but no accumulation is expected in the District. Temperatures will remain in the 30s on Saturday and Sunday.

"Our eyes are on this storm system late Sunday and throughout the day on Monday. We could get a period of snow or a wintry mix out there depending on which way this storm system goes. Altogether, the Monday morning commute could certainly be impacted," Grenda says.

The NWS notes that the snow could begin during the overnight hours and continue into the evening on Monday, with high temperatures near 32 degrees.
