DC snow forecast: Snow expected to continue until Monday evening

An impressive amount of snow has fallen, and more is on the way as a winter storm moves across the Washington, D.C. region, bringing the first significant snowfall of the season so far.

The Brief

    • Heavy Snowfall Expected: Total accumulations of 5 to 10 inches, with isolated spots possibly receiving up to 12 inches plus.
    • Travel Impact: Roads, both untreated and primary, may become impassable. Non-essential travel is strongly discouraged.
    • Weather Conditions: Snowfall rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour in the morning, a break with intermittent light snow and sleet by late morning, and a second round of snow in the late afternoon and evening.

WASHINGTON - An impressive amount of snow has already fallen, with more expected, as a winter storm moves through the Washington, D.C. region, marking the first significant snowfall of the season.

How long will it snow?

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for D.C., central and northern Maryland, and northern Virginia, which is effective until 1 a.m. Tuesday. 

Heavy snow is expected to continue, with total accumulations ranging from five to 10 inches. Isolated spots potentially could see upwards of 12 inches if heavy banding occurs. Ice accumulations are also possible.

Untreated and unplowed roads may become impassable, and even primary roads could become impassable during the heaviest snowfall periods. Non-essential travel is highly discouraged.

How much snow is expected?

Snowfall rates between one and three inches per hour are possible through mid-morning. There will be a break from late morning through early afternoon with intermittent light snow, sleet, or freezing drizzle. 

A second round of snow is expected late this afternoon and evening before the precipitation ends tonight sometime between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Motorists are advised to use extreme caution if travel is necessary. It is recommended to keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

Residents are urged to consider delaying all travel until conditions improve.

The downtown Washington, D.C. area is covered in snow as the first snowfall of the season moves across the region.

Are schools closed on Tuesday?

The heavy snow accumulations and hazardous driving conditions are making travel difficult on Monday. Schools all across the region closed on Monday. It is likely that school districts will close or delay opening times on Tuesday as snow is expected to fall into evening hours and could create slippery conditions after refreezing.
