WASHINGTON - District education officials released scores on new standardized tests that are meant to assess students' performance on the Common Core academic standards.
The tests were administered for the first time this past spring, and scores for third through eighth graders were made public on Monday. Only a quarter of students in those grades met or exceeded expectations in English, and only 24 percent met the benchmark on updated math tests.
D.C. schools chancellor Kaya Henderson said the results are sobering, but they know the students can meet the new higher standard.
The test is called the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC), and it asks students to demonstrate their knowledge and apply their skills in areas such as critical thinking, analytical writing, and problem solving.
