DC region cleans up after thunderstorms, gusty winds and possible tornado move across area

The D.C. region is continuing to clean up after severe weather moved across the area overnight.

On Friday, National Weather Service officials confirmed that a tornado touched down in the Tysons Corner area of Fairfax County around 8:41 p.m. Images from the scene show damage to the pumps and awning of the Sunoco Gas Station on Chain Bridge Road.

NWS officials say that Sunoco was one of two gas stations in the area damaged by Thursday night's tornado. The other station was the Mobil Gas Station also located on Chain Bridge Road, about 120 feet away from the Sunoco station. The NWS reports a garage door at the Mobile Station was blown away, metal paneling on the building's roof was damaged, and a small canopy hanging over the entrance was mangled beyond repair.

Branches were scattered across roadways across the region and power outages left some residents in the dark.
