WASHINGTON - Body cameras for D.C. police will be the focus of a public hearing in the District Wednesday. Currently, the pilot program involves 400 body cameras in two police districts. Under the current plan, none of the video is available to the public.
Mayor Muriel Bowser wants to outfit officers in every district with body worn cameras. The City Council is proposing policy changes that would allow more access to the video depending on the circumstances.
Prosecutors and the Office of Police Complaints can see the unedited videos. The mayor is also able to release recordings of "significant public interest", such as officer involved shootings, use of force, or assaults on an officer.
The hearing will take place at the Wilson Building at 10 a.m. in room 412 and is open to the public.
