DC mayor to announce possibilities for honoring Marion Barry

WASHINGTON (AP) -- It's been one year since the death of Marion Barry, and District of Columbia officials are closer to deciding how the former four-term mayor will be commemorated.

Mayor Muriel Bowser plans to announce recommendations for how to honor Barry at a reception on Monday evening in southeast Washington. Barry's widow, Cora Masters Barry, and other friends, relatives and former colleagues are scheduled to attend.

Bowser appointed a commission to consider memorials for Barry. Some ideas floated by the commission include a statue in front of the District's city hall and naming a high school after him.

Cora Masters Barry says the tentative plan is for one memorial to Barry in each of the city's four quadrants. She says the recommendations will reflect his significance to the District's history.
