WASHINGTON - One person has died following a fire at a multi-story apartment building in northwest Washington, D.C. that injured a firefighter, authorities said.
The firefighter suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. Three residents of the building also suffered injuries considered to be not life-threatening.
Firefighters were able to rescue multiple residents and assisted many others in evacuating as they battled the smoke and flames at the nine-story apartment building in the 1200 block of M Street. Authorities say the building houses many senior residents.
The fire was reported around 8:30 a.m. on the eighth floor of the building. Crews used an aerial tower to help evacuate some residents. Officials say smoke conditions were present on the upper floors of the building.
A mayday call for a firefighter that was in distress was made and resolved.
Drivers are urged to use caution as numerous closures and detours are in place.
