Georgetown Wawa set to close permanently next week

Wawa has confirmed it will close another one of its DMV locations in one week.

Effective Dec. 17, Wawa will permanently close its Georgetown location at 1222 Wisconsin Avenue in Northwest D.C., a company spokesperson confirmed Tuesday. The decision comes after "careful evaluations", according to a statement sent to FOX 5.

"Please know that all our associates from this store will be given the opportunity to transfer to nearby Wawa stores. We appreciate the support of the community over the past few years, but at this point, our long-term plans for this store are no longer viable. The decision at this location was a business decision and included many factors which we apply to all of our stores on an ongoing basis. We are grateful for the support of the community, and we hope to continue serving them from our other nearby stores," the statement reads.

It’s unclear how long employees have known and how many are employed at the Georgetown location, though many customers were caught off guard Tuesday.

"That sucks. Yeah, that’s terrible. Hopefully, they put something better here, I guess, but this was a quick and cheap thing to get something to eat," Javae Graham said. "It is busy all the time. I don’t know what kind of a business decision it could be. It can’t be a smart one, in any case."

Like Graham, Jose Bou also works in the area and said he stops by the Wawa every week.

"Seems like it’s always busy, so I’m surprised that it’s closing," Bou said. "It’s convenient, you know? Well, I’m here. It’s a place to stop to get whatever you want. A sandwich, coke, gum, whatever."

Wawa did not elaborate what the "long-term plans" were for the shop were before deciding to close. According to the online store locator, there are about 50 stores located in the DMV and Baltimore areas.
