SILVER SPRING, Md. - Crisfield Seafood, a beloved community staple in Silver Spring, is closing its doors after nearly 80 years of serving the community.
The announcement, made on Wednesday, left many residents saddened and surprised.
Crisfield Seafood was opened by the Landis family in 1945 on Georgia Avenue.
Over the decades, it became a cherished dining spot for locals, known for its seafood bisque, broiled fish platters, and crab cakes. Some patrons have been enjoying meals there for over 40 years.
The restaurant's walls are adorned with autographed photos of TV and radio personalities, actors, actresses, and professional athletes, reflecting its long-standing popularity and cultural significance.
The New York Times even included Crisfield Seafood in its list of "The 25 Best Restaurants in Washington, D.C. Right Now."
In a written statement, the Landis family expressed their gratitude to their loyal customers and staff.
"The Landis Family would like to express our thanks and gratitude to all of our customers, fellow teammates, and friends. A special thanks to the myriad of sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, and cousins, of our extended family who helped us build a DMV legacy. We have always felt that the restaurant was just another room in our house. We have been proud to welcome you to our home for nearly 80 years," the statement read.
An employee revealed that the closure is due to the inability of one of the Landis family members to reach an agreement to renew the lease.
Despite the circumstances, the community is left to reminisce about the good times shared at the restaurant.
Crisfield Seafood will officially close on December 22 at 8:30 p.m.
Reflecting on the restaurant's legacy, an employee remarked, "We had a good run."
