Long lines and shuttle buses greeted commuters who normally ride Metrorail's Red Line trains.

Improvements scheduled on a portion of the Red Line mean buses will replace trains between Fort Totten and Silver Spring until the maintenance is finished on Sunday, December 10. The buses will replace the trains at all times, including rush hour.

Metro says the two-week maintenance work is necessary so that crews can construct a new interlocking where trains move from one track to another. Officials say both tracks must be out of service for the work to take place.

During rush hour trains between the Grosvenor ad NoMa stations will run every five minutes, between Shady Grove and Fort Totten every ten minutes, and between Glenmont and Silver Spring every 12 minutes.

The Takoma station will be closed during the improvement project.
