FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (FOX 5 DC) - Closures are coming to I-395 this weekend, and for several more, as Virginia's Department of Transportation transforms its HOV lanes into Express lanes.
Officials hope the transition will lead to quicker commutes. But for now, drivers must navigate through several weekend closures, construction zones, and detours as the project kicks off.
It's no secret that traffic going between the District and Northern Virginia can create headaches for commuters - and that's what VDOT hopes to fix.
TransUrban's Mike McGurk says they'll oversee the Express Lanes project and upcoming closures necessary for crews to safely rehabilitate five bridges along I-395 between the Springfield interchanges and the D.C. border.
The project is expected to cost $425 million.
Additional bridge work will continue along the I-395 corridor for at least the next four weekends.
