Toddler shot, killed in Southeast DC

A 3-year-old girl was shot and killed in the District Friday night after gunshots rang out in a Southeast neighborhood. Near the scene of the crime, the Metropolitan Police Department's Seventh District Commander LaShay Makal stated that the toddler was inside a vehicle when she was struck by bullets.

Near the scene of the crime, the Metropolitan Police Department's Seventh District Commander, LaShay Makal, stated that the toddler was inside a vehicle when she was struck by bullets. 

The young victim was not conscious or breathing when officers showed up at 24th and Irving St. SE just after 9 p.m. 

The 3-year-old was flown to a hospital, Commander MaKal said, where she later succumbed to her injuries and died. 

Investigators believe the toddler was not the intended target, but was caught in the crossfire.

Young girl shot in Southeast DC

A 3-year-old girl has to be flown to the hospital Friday night after shots were fired in a Southeast community. FOX 5's Shomari Stone spoke to neighbors who heard the gunfire.

FOX 5 saw a massive police presence gathering in the community. Detectives are still investigating the incident.
