CHARLES CO., Md. - A police-involved shooting is being investigated in Charles County, the Sheriff’s Office says.
At approximately 3 p.m. on Dec. 20, officers responded to the 7300 block of Tottenham Drive in White Plains after receiving a 911 call from a man who reported that he had been kidnapped and sexually assaulted. The address was already known to law enforcement.
When officers arrived, they saw a person inside the house wearing a mask.
Officers gave numerous commands for the person to surrender, which he ignored. The person then exited the house and went into an open garage where officers again gave him verbal commands but he refused to comply.
He told police that he was armed and threatened the officers and intentionally positioned his body in a shooting stance. The three officers then fired their service weapons.
The man was incapacitated and officers rendered first aid until EMS arrived as other officers checked the house to try to locate a potential victim. No one else was found in the house.
The man was taken to a hospital with critical injuries and was later pronounced dead.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the 911 call was made from the man’s cell phone number.
The incident, including the conversation and interaction between the subject and officers, was captured on multiple body-worn cameras.
In accordance with Maryland law, the officers were placed on administrative leave and the Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division responded to the scene to assume the investigation.
The Charles County Sheriff’s Office of Professional Responsibility is conducting an administrative investigation.
Additional details will be provided by the MD OAG Independent Investigations Division.
