Baltimore police: Man arrested for carrying handgun near scene of recent riots

Baltimore police say they have arrested a man on a handgun charge near the scene of recent rioting over the death of a man fatally injured in officers' custody.

Police clarified on Twitter and at a news conference on Monday that reports that the man was shot were not accurate.

FOX 5's Lena Burns said a commotion in the area began at around 2:30 p.m. as a crowd of people was seen running. She witnessed people on the street wiping their faces and crying out in pain from apparent pepper spray.

Baltimore Police Lt. Col. Melvin Russell said street cameras detected someone carrying a handgun and they approached that individual.

"Police come in, [after] a very short brief foot pursuit, he attempts to pull [a handgun] out," said Russell. "There is a sound of a weapon discharging. The police never discharged any weapon. We check him out, we finally stop him. We get the weapon back. It is a revolver, and that revolver, there are three cartridges. One of them are spent, meaning it has been fired."

Police then began to fill and line the streets to block off one street after the commotion. Medics were also seen putting a man in an ambulance.

The suspect was not injured and did not want to be transported to a hospital but was taken to the hospital anyway in an ambulance, Russell said.

The activity took place in the Penn North neighborhood, where police first spotted Freddie Gray on April 12. He was arrested and fatally injured in police custody. Six officers were charged Friday in Gray's death.
