Baby dies, step-grandfather charged with manslaughter
CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md. - Authorities have charged a man with manslaughter in the death of his wife's 6-month-old grandson.
Prince George's County police say 48-year-old Lenwood Pearson has been charged with manslaughter, first-degree child abuse resulting in death and assault.
Pearson is the infant's step-grandfather.
Officers were called to Pearson's Capitol Heights home on Sept. 13 for a report of an injured baby, according to officials. Police say the baby, 6-month old Demetri Hooper, was taken to a hospital, where he died three days later.
An autopsy showed that the cause of death was trauma to the baby's head and his death was ruled a homicide, according to officials. Police say Hooper's injuries occurred while Pearson was caring for him.
It's unclear whether Pearson has an attorney.
