Amtrak passenger arrested on Virginia-bound train; guns found at Newark Station
What we know
A man traveling on a Virginia-bound Amtrak train was arrested Friday after New Jersey Transit Police discovered firearms in an unattended bag at Newark Penn Station.
Around 3 p.m., officers inspecting the bag found a handgun and a loaded rifle. Investigators determined the bag’s owner had purchased a ticket and boarded a train destined for Virginia.
The train was stopped in Trenton, where NJ Transit officials say the man resisted arrest before being taken into custody. Police later discovered he was also carrying three handguns and two rifles.
A K9 unit cleared the train of any further threats, halting the trip briefly in Trenton during the investigation. NJ Transit said the train later continued to its destination.
The New Jersey Transit Police Department is leading the investigation, which remains ongoing. Further details will be released as they become available.
