Alexandria suspends yard waste pickup because of heat

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) -- The City of Alexandria is trying to give its city workers a bit of a break from the heat.

City workers are not picking up any yard waste on Monday or Tuesday, as temperatures are expected to approach 100 degrees.

Residents should set out yard waste on the next scheduled pickup date.

Trash pickup will continue as scheduled.

Like other communities, Alexandria is urging residents take advantage of cooling centers and air-conditioned public spaces like libraries and malls to beat the heat, and to check on neighbors who lack air conditioning.
