Corewell shooting: Suspect arrested after 25-year-old victim shot in parking structure

One man is in custody while another is recovering at a hospital after a shooting at a hospital in Troy sparked chaos around the community.

The shooting was a "targeted attack" and took place Thursday morning at the Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital parking garage, local police said.

What we know:

Local police from Oakland and Macomb counties responded to reports of an active shooter at Corewell Health Beaumont hospital in Troy on Thursday morning.

At 7:08 a.m., Troy police received a call from the hospital security about a shooting that happened in the parking garage. They were told that a handgun has been fired five times, striking a victim in the arm as well as his car.

Chief Josh Jones said Thursday afternoon that the suspect had left the area immediately after the shooting. He was later arrested at a home in Macomb Township.

The victim, a 25-year-old man from Troy, is currently in stable condition.

The suspect was arrested around 9:30 a.m.

Several police agencies, across both counties and including sheriffs offices and local departments, as well as the ATF assisted in his capture.

What we don't know:

With the suspect in custody and the victim recovering, the immediate investigation is now complete.

The probe into the shooting now expands into what led up to the shooting - and details behind any motive have not been released.

Where the firearm was obtained as well as both party's history will also be investigated.

Local perspective:

In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Corewell hospital went into lockdown.

Nearby schools and daycare centers also went into a soft lockdown as confusion over the status of the shooter and the nature of the violence remained.

"It was a targeted incident….but it was reported as an active shooter and, frankly, we didn't have anyone in custody, we had hospital staff, patients, that believed it was an active shooter," said Jones.

The chief added they were lucky things were not worse, but after incidents like the splashpad shooting in 2024 and other mass casualty events, much of the response on Thursday matched previous cases.

"We've been conditioned when someone says we have an active shooter, we know how much resources it's going to take to work that scene," Jones said. "And it (the response) was overwhelming, frankly. And I'm not surprised, having been in this community for awhile."
