Charges pending for 71-year-old accused in Arlington crash that left woman dead
ARLNIGTON, Va. - Arlington County Police say charges are pending against a driver involved in a multi-car crash that left a 32-year-old woman dead Monday.
The deadly crash happened around 2:40 p.m. Monday. Police and fire responded to Wilson Boulevard near N. Vermont Street and N. Glebe Road. Police have identified the woman killed as 32-year-old Xuewei He from McLean.
As of now, there’s no identification of the 71-year-old driver of the truck that struck her vehicle but police say charges are pending against him. That driver remains in critical but stable condition in an area hospital, according to Arlington County Police.
The backstory:
First responders were called to the scene around 2:40 p.m. for a report of a collision involving multiple cars.
Police say it appears that Xuewei He was trying a right turn off of North Vermont Street onto Wilson Boulevard. As she did that, the 71-year-old driver of the pickup truck was headed down Wilson at a high rate of speed and hit Xuewei He's white sedan as she was making the turn.
The impact of the crash caused their two cars to slam into two other vehicles as they traveled toward the intersection at Glebe Road. That's where their cars came to a rest.
Arlington County Police say she was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Surveillance cameras along Wilson Boulevard captured the driver of this pickup truck before the crash.
You can see the truck appearing to speed down a hill in the oncoming lane. Moments before that, video shows the truck going through another intersection in the oncoming lane and passing right past a police officer who was stopped at the light.
Local perspective:
Florence McKeever lives nearby and says she has walked around the area often. She said the crash was shocking, and saddening.
"I’ve been carrying around here for 36 years as letter carrier down here on Glebe Road and Arlington Boulevard. So, you know, I always seen a lot of stuff but that was the first time I’ve seen something like that," McKeever said, "I was here, and I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of whoever passed, you know, and, that’s just about it. I know stuff like that doesn’t happen in Arlington but every blue moon."
There's been no word from Arlington County Police about why the driver of the truck was driving in the manner he was.
Despite the fact that he passed police officers in the moments leading up to this crash, police say they were not pursuing him.
"It’s just awful that drivers do these sorts of things sometimes," said Hank Morris, who also lives nearby.
It's not clear exactly what charges the driver of the pickup truck will face. FOX 5 will stay ahead of any developments.
