FRISCO, Tx. - Jake Garrett-McCann is just 7-years-old, but he's been tackling homelessness by collecting donations for the homeless since he was 4.
The issue first came to Jake's attention when he was 3-years-old. He was vacationing in Austin, Texas with his two moms when a homeless man approached them looking for money.
His mother, Jennifer McCann, told FOX 4, "And so we tried to explain the best we could to a three-year-old what a homeless person is and it really stuck him."
Jake quickly understood, and his reaction was innocent and beautiful.
"I just felt like they needed help so I thought I should start helping them," Jake said.
He went to work, and within a year started Jake's Heart -- a non-profit organization helping the homeless and making the world a better place.
Kimber Garrett, Jake's mother, said she's "super proud" of her son. "I mean it's amazing to see him… The curiosity of the kindness and the love, the laughter he has every day."
With the help of the community, he plans on handing out 1,000 care packages to the homeless this year.
"It makes me feel good and when they feel sad, I feel sad. When they're happy, I'm happy. I just like helping people," Jake said.
