Want a better morning? Don't we all. But there are a few things you can do to help your body wake up the right way, and set yourself up for a great day (even if it means you're spending it at the office).
Dr. Mike Varshavski shared some of his own tips for your best possible morning routine, and there's a good chance you're not doing them right now. But you should be! Here's his list:
1. Don't hit snooze
It's tempting. Ok, it's REALLY tempting. But the snooze button will actually make you more tired. Instead, set your alarm for the time you DO have to be up-- as in, the last possible minute. If you hit snooze for a few minutes, your body goes back into a deep sleep-- and then you're just more groggy when you actually do wake up. Which brings us to #2...
2. Start by actually waking up
Put the phone far, far away from your bed. When it rings to wake you up, you'll actually have to get up to shut it off. Then, you get up and stay up.
3. Wake up with warm water & lemon
Your body gets dehydrated when you sleep for 7-9 hours (hint), so you've got to rehydrate first thing. Dr. Mike says his magic concoction is a glass of warm water with fresh lemon squeezed in it. Why warm? Your digestive system loves warmth because it pulls circulation to it, and that means you get all the nutritients from your nutritious breakfast.
4. Cold shower
But before you say no-- you don't have to do ALL cold shower. It sounds awful, but start at just 10 seconds and work your way up. Dr. Mike says you'll get a circulation boost and some studies show it can even give you a testosterone boost. So turn that water to the C and then...
5. Eat smart
For breakfast, you need protein and good quality carbs. No donuts. Complex carbs-- like oatmeal-- give you energy through the day, without the crash.
6. Get moving
Some people love working out in the morning, and others don't. Dr. Mike says you should work out in a way that's best for you-- but what you MUST do is get moving some how. That can be a full-on workout, some good stretching, or, even better, core work. Planks and pushups, anyone?
