HAYMARKET, Va. (AP) -- Virginia State Police say a 5-year-old girl was killed and other people were hurt in a chain-reaction crash in Haymarket.
The agency said in a news release that the crash occurred Monday morning on Interstate 66. Troopers say traffic was slowing in a work zone when a Nissan pickup truck hit a Chevrolet Cobalt in front of it. The collision pushed the Chevy into the vehicle in front of it, and that car into the vehicle in front of it.
Police say 5-year-old Nayla Mitchel died at the scene. Authorities say her parents, 26-year-old Simone Rhodes, who was driving the Chevy, and 34-year-old Gerald Mitchel of Washington, were hospitalized with serious injuries.
Troopers say the driver of the Nissan, 27-year-old Dustin Skidgel of Markham, was taken to a hospital.
Skidgel is charged with reckless driving.
