A firefighter was injured, and 13 residents were rescued after smoke and flames engulfed a southeast D.C. apartment building.

A firefighter was injured, and 13 residents were rescued after smoke and flames engulfed a southeast D.C. apartment building.

The fire was reported around 1:40 a.m. in the 5200 block of D Street.

Authorities say three residents were rescued. The injured firefighter suffered non-life threatening injuries. The Red Cross is helping 21 displaced residents.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
