1 dead after fiery crash closes lanes on Outer Loop of Beltway at I-66
DUNN LORING, Va. (FOX 5 DC) - One person has died after a fiery crash involving a tractor-trailer closed multiple lanes on the Outer Loop of the Beltway at Interstate 66 early Thursday morning.
Virginia State Police said the crash happened at about 1:50 a.m. at Exit 49 on Interstate 495 in the Dunn Loring area.
Investigators said the tractor-trailer ran off the right side of the interstate, struck the cement barrier and ruptured the truck's fuel tank.
The tractor-trailer caught fire and erupted into flames.
The driver of the tractor-trailer died at the scene of the crash, according to officials. The victim has not yet been identified.
All lanes of the Outer Loop were closed until just after 6 a.m. when two lanes were reopened.
At this time, police said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
