Shift Captain: Missing Virginia firefighter Nicole Mittendorff called in sick last Wednesday

Authorities said a missing Virginia firefighter called in sick last Wednesday before not showing up to work on Friday, adding to the mystery surrounding her disappearance. The announcement was made by the shift captain at the fire station where 31-year-old Nicole Mittendorff worked at.

Federal, state and volunteer teams have spent days searching Shenandoah National Park for any signs of Mittendorff after her vehicle was discovered at the park Saturday evening. FOX 5 has learned federal money has been given to the search effort. Now, the urban search and rescue team and five additional search dogs are out at Shenandoah National Park searching for the missing woman.

Virginia State Police said they have received more than 100 tips regarding the disappearance of the 31-year-old. Investigators are still working to establish a timeline since Mittendorff last made contact with her family on April 13 to Saturday evening when her 2009 Mini Cooper was located at Shenandoah National Park. Police said the evidence so far still suggests nothing suspicious about her disappearance.

We have also learned that Mittendorff's family believes that she downloaded some sort of file from her cell phone. They had asked the phone carrier to provide that file. The phone carrier, however, initially declined because it was not a criminal case. However, legal teams got involved, and on Wednesday, the phone carrier will now be providing those downloaded files to law enforcement in hopes that it will give some clues to Mittendorff's whereabouts.

Fire sources in Fairfax County told FOX 5 that Mittendorff was recently reassigned from Station 30 to Station 32. The fire department would not confirm that information and why she was reassigned.

Another prayer vigil for Mittendorff will be held Wednesday night at Station 32. Wednesday marks one week since family members have heard from Mittendorff.

These developments comes one day after an emotional press conference was held by her husband, Steve Mittendorff. During his statement, he expressed his love for Nicole and asked for the public's help in finding her.

Mittendorff is described by police as a white woman standing 5'6" inches tall and weighing 125 pounds. Police said she has blonde hair and green eyes. Virginia State Police are asking anyone with information on Mittendorff's location to call 703-803-0026 or #77 on a cell phone or 911 or email at questions@vsp.virginia.gov.
