DC program teaches girls about winning at chess and in life
WASHINGTON - Chess Girls D.C. is a program that teaches young girls to play chess in the District, but they get a lot of other skills and lessons from the game.
Started by Robin Ramson, the program teaches young girls critical thinking and strategy. They learn to think creatively and be aware of their choices.
Ramson says she was inspired by her daughter, who played chess at their local library.
"They learn how to analyze the consequences of a certain action, they think about strategic planning," says Ramson.
The program is free to join, supported by grants and donations.
Anyone who wishes to donate or wants to learn more can visit Chess Girls DC website and Facebook page.
FOX 5 and Easterns Automotive Group teamed up to help Pay It Forward to Ramson and the Chess Girls DC by presenting them with supplies including books, bags and chess clocks, as well as a donation of $460 fulfill the program's GoFundMe page fundraiser which will continue the Chess Girls DC program at Emery Recreation Center.
