Metro crews finish repairs following Red Line derailment

WASHINGTON - Monday's train derailment on a stretch of track along Metro's Red Line caused delays for commuters that lasted well into the morning on Tuesday.

Red Line trains began the day running every ten minutes with single tracking between Judiciary Square and Farragut North due to continuing repairs outside of the Farragut North station. Single tracking ended around 10:30 a.m. Officials say residual delays can still be expected.

The derailment was first reported around 6:30 a.m. Monday morning inside a tunnel near D.C.'s Farragut North station.

According to investigators, the derailment was caused by a break in the rail that occurred as the 8-car train was passing over it. They say the first four cars of train passed the location without incident, but three train cars did derail.

Sixty-three passengers were escorted by emergency crews for about 200 yards as they walked through a tunnel connecting to the Metro Center station. Officials identified the cars that derailed as being part of the new 7000 series.
