Virginia teacher arrested on charges of drinking, possessing alcohol on public school grounds

ASHBURN, Va. - A Loudoun County teacher was arrested police say, after she was reportedly found with alcohol in her possession on public school grounds.

Loudoun County Sheriff's office says they were called to Newton-Lee Elementary School in Ashburn for reports of a possible medical emergency involving a teacher at the school.

First responders offered medical care to 41-year-old Teresa D. Folsom, of Leesburg, a fourth-grade teacher at the school, but she refused.

She was later taken to the hospital by a family member.

Investigators say Folsom was charged with drinking and possessing alcohol on public school grounds on June 1.

This is the third incident since last Spring in Loudoun County involving a teacher having alcohol on alcohol on campus. There was one incident in December at Sterling Middle School and another last April at Sterling Elementary School.

The school district says it offers assistance for staff with alcohol addiction and related issues. Loudoun County Public Schools says they offer sessions with psychologist or counselors.

The school district says Folsom is currently on leave and could not give further comment on personnel matters.

Parents reportedly notified via letter on Wednesday. They say the notification to families was delayed because the incident was part of an ongoing investigation.

Shawn Lyons, principal at Newton-Lee Elementary, sent a letter to parents, providing a brief summary about what happened. He said because this is an ongoing legal and personnel issue, there's nothing more that can be said about it.

Police say Folsom was released from the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center on a personal recognizance bond. She is due in court in July.
