US Capitol Christmas Tree arrives in DC

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree has completed its journey to the nation's capital where it will be decorated for the holiday season.

The tree traveled 3,000 miles and spent two weeks on the road during its journey from the Willamette National Forest in Oregon. Several stops were made in towns across the country along the way.

The 'People's Tree' is a 80-foot noble fir and will sit on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. The annual tree lighting ceremony will take place on Dec. 5 and will feature thousands of ornaments and lights.

The annual tradition of placing a Christmas tree at the U.S. Capitol began back in 1964 when then-Speaker of the House John McCormack placed a live tree on the Capitol lawn. Since 1970, a different national forest has been chosen each year to provide the tree.
