DC transgender woman shot in neck on Fourth of July dies at hospital
WASHINGTON - A transgender woman shot overnight on the Fourth of July in Northeast D.C. has died from her injuries over a week later at the hospital.
D.C. police said 22-year-old Gregory Dodds, but known as Deeniqua Dodds, was found unconscious after suffering a gunshot wound to her neck in the 200 block of Division Avenue.
Dodds was transported to the hospital for treatment, but would die nine days later from her injuries on Wednesday.
Dodd's family told FOX 5 that she often worked late at night as a prostitute and that was what she was doing on the morning she was shot.
Police said at this time they do not believe this was a hate crime, but the victim's aunt said she believes Dodd was targeted because of the way she looked.
"We do have guys out here robbing transgenders when they make their money," Dodd's aunt said. "They will come and rob them or sometimes they might beat them up or sometimes they just might rob them and keep it moving. So you got to worry about that out here too being a transgender."
D.C. police is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction in this case. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 202-727-9099 or leave tips anonymously by text messaging 50411.
