Speed camera coming to Indian Head Highway in Prince George's County
FORT WASHINGTON, Md. - Speed could be to blame for what's considered the most dangerous stretch of roadway in the area and now drivers on Indian Head Highway near the National Harbor could be forced to slow down or face punishment.
FOX 5 is told a speed camera will be installed along the stretch of road in Fort Washington on Oct. 1. This comes after several fatal crashes on Indian Head Highway - more than 60 in the last decade, including two this year with the most recent taking place late in August.
That doesn't include the more than 130 crashes that have caused severe injuries.
"No other road is as flawed with deadly crashes and fatalities and injuries and it's not only just drivers, it's also pedestrians and also motorcyclists," John Townshend with AAA explained. "It's almost as if the road is a fatal attraction because it's so straight."
Officials hope that the speed camera will get drivers to follow the posted 45 mph limit.
"The solution is a total change in the safety culture on Indian Head Highway," Townshend said.
Residents in Fort Washington told FOX 5 they wanted several speed cameras along the stretch of Indian Head Highway, but the law only allows for one in one direction.
