D.C. Police make third arrest in murder of 10-year-old girl Makiyah Wilson
WASHINGTON - D.C. police say they have made a third arrest in the July murder of 10-year-old Makiyah Wilson.
D.C. police Chief Peter Newsham said at a press briefing on Wednesday that investigators have arrested 23-year-old Gregory Taylor of Fort Washington, Md. He has been charged with First Degree Murder while Armed.
Since mid-July police have been looking for five men who pulled into a northeast apartment complex in a stolen car and opened fire.
Ten-year-old Makiyah was hit in front of her home by a stray bullet.
Police arrested two suspects 20-year-old Qujuan Thomas and 21-year-old Quentin Michals were both arrested in August.
Authorities said Taylor, Michals and Thomas are reportedly members of the Wellington Park Crew.
Taylor, who went by the nickname "Gizzle" was described in a court document as a ring leader who said in a text message to another member of the Wellington Park Crew "Let's go do what we do."
Detectives are still looking for one suspect in the case who officials said is a gang member of the Wellington Park Crew as well, but has not yet been charged in connection with the murder.
"We don't always have all of the evidence that we need on all of the suspect, but as soon as we get that evidence we bring it over to the US Attorneys office for review. We get a warrant and we bring them into custody. Like I said a little bit earlier we are not going to rest in this case until we have everybody responsible," said Chief Newsham.
Court records state the motive for the shooting was payback for a 2017 shooting on Stanton Road in which Michals and two others were shot and wounded.
Both Thomas and Michals have a preliminary hearing scheduled for Thursday.
