Sinkholes develop on Maryland roads following week of heavy rain and flooding

Frederick, Md. - As wet conditions and flooding continue to affect Maryland, sinkholes have developed in the state overnight.

In Frederick, which has been hit hard by heavy rain, a sinkhole opened up Monday night in the northbound right lane on Monocacy Boulevard near Spires Way, near Clustered Spires Golf Club, according to authorities.

Frederick police say crews are working to assess the situation. Southbound lanes will be shifted to accommodate two-way traffic, officials say and recommend drivers use caution.

In Annapolis, a sinkhole closes MD Route 450 (Defense Highway) between A and Eagle Boulevard and Windmere Court, according to Maryland State Highway Administration.

Maryland SHA advises drivers take alternate routes, US-50 or Harry S Truman Parkway.
