Water main break creates sinkhole that strands Metrobus, traps vehicles on Southeast DC street

WASHINGTON - A water main break is to blame for a a huge sinkhole that opened up on a road in Southeast D.C. temporarily stranding a Metrobus and trapping several other vehicles as the ground collapsed around them.

The sinkhole was reported early Tuesday on the 3500 block of 6th Street. Images from the scene showed water gushing from cracks in the ground. Officials say utility crews have tuned off the water and are working to repair the break in the eight inch main. They will them turn their attention to repairing the road.

FOX 5's Bob Barnard was on the scene all morning and watched as the stranded bus backed down the street. Road crews them used tow trucks and cables to pull the other vehicles free. No injuries were reported.

Crews are expected to be on the scene throughout the day. Traffic delays can be expected in the area,
