Purple Line construction plagued by delays, soaring costs

SILVER SPRING, Md. - Purple Line problems are mounting for residents and construction crews in Maryland.

According to the Washington Post, the project's completion date has been delayed a year, and the delay is tacking at least $215 million onto the cost.

In Montgomery County, any delay means more noise and construction.

The Washington Post is reporting Purple Line Transit Partners has notified the state that the Purple Line's completion is far behind the projected March 2022 opening date.

In Silver Spring, residents say they're navigating traffic caused by the line's construction, plus noise.

Purple Line NOW's President, Purple Line Transit Partners CEO, and county lawmakers are expected to attend a meeting about residents' concerns about the light rail line tonight.

The Maryland Transit Authority says it is still working to have the Purple Line completed by 2022:

"The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration and the Purple Line Transit Partners are still working on developing a recovery schedule to open the Purple Line for revenue service by the end of 2022. We are currently negotiating the terms of how to accomplish a 2022 recovery schedule."
