Protest against power lines threatening historic Virginia neighborhood
HAYMARKET, Va. - The Alliance to Save Carver Road held a rally Saturday to protest proposed power lines threatening a historic neighborhood,
The organization formed in an effort to prevent Dominion Energy from constructing 100-foot-high power lines servicing the Amazon data center in Haymarket, Virginia.
"Despite Dominion Energy's claim that they will seek a new route, we cannot let down our guard because there has been so much disinformation put forward in the past by those with vested interests in the power line," said Alliance to Save Carver Road spokesperson Joyce Hudson.
One of the proposed routes runs through a historic African-American neighborhood made up of primarily elderly residents.
The Carver Road neighborhood southwest of Washington D.C. contains properties acquired under an 1866 law that allowed freed slaves to own property.
A GoFundMe page has been established to fund opposition to the power line.
