Flames engulf Prince George's County recycling facility

CHEVERLY, Md. - Prince George's County worked for several hours on a two-alarm fire at a recycling facility in Cheverly.

Mark Brady with Prince George's County Fire and EMS says at around 6:30 p.m., crews arrived to the World Recycling facility at the 5600 block of Columbia Park Road.

Firefighters saw smoke showing through the building when they arrived. However, flames were seen through the roof shortly after.

Officials say the building partially collapsed, with 75 percent of it being consumed by flames.

At around 6:50 p.m., Prince George's County reported that all firefighters have been evacuated from inside the building while units set up for defensive exterior operations.

Officials say damage from the fire is estimated at $8M with a majority of the loss being machinery.

Prince George's County fire personnel and units remained on scene Sunday and into Monday to keep a watch for any possible issues remaining from the fire.

No injuries were been reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Also on Saturday evening, a fire broke out at the 2900 block of Brierdale Lane in Bowie. A firefighter is being transported to a Burn Unit with non-life-threatening injuries for treatment of burns sustained during the initial interior attack on the fire.

Prince George's County Fire says a person is being detained by police until fire investigators have an opportunity to talk with him.
