Powerful water main break forces evacuations in Montgomery Village
MONTGOMERY VILLAGE, Md. (FOX 5 DC) - A massive water main break destroyed townhomes, caused evacuations and created a sinkhole in Montgomery Village Thursday.
It happened on the 9600 block of Brassie Way, according to officials.
WSSC crews have shutdown service to repair the 8" main.
Officials say around 40 people have been evacuated from 30 townhomes.
The Red Cross is assisting the displaced families.
WSSC confirms there were several water main breaks earlier this week in this townhouse community and the pipes are nearly 50 years old.
They will be assessing the pipes to see if they need to do a large scale replacement project.
The spokesperson says the sinkhole could be filled and covered by early tomorrow morning, but it depends on the size of the break.
She says the company feels the community is safe.
