Crash that caused delays in Prince George's County could be linked to string of ATM robberies
GREENBELT, Md. (FOX 5 DC) - An early morning crash that caused delays to drivers in the Greenbelt area may possibly be connected to a string of automatic teller machine robberies that have plagued the D.C. region for months.
Police say the crash happened around 4 a.m. along the outer loop of Interstate-495 at Kenilworth Avenue.
Authorities were pursuing the pickup truck involved in the crash after undercover officers in Montgomery County intervened in what appeared to be a robbery attempt at a 7-Eleven on Lockwood Drive in the Silver Spring area.
Law enforcement officers across the D.C. region have been investigating a string of smash-and-grab robberies in which thieves use vehicles to crash into 7-Eleven storefronts and steal the ATM machine inside.
