Woman dead after becoming trapped under brush at Montgomery County solid waste transfer station

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (FOX 5 DC) -- A woman is dead after becoming trapped under a large pile of brush at a solid waste transfer station in Derwood.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue officials say the woman, who was later identified in a statement by Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich as Gladis Loren Melendrez Fuentes, was located and extricated with traumatic injuries at the Solid Waste Transfer Station on Frederick Road.

Melendez Fuentes was a contractor who worked at the Shady Grove Transfer Station, according to Elrich.

"I am terribly saddened by the tragic accident that took the life of Gladis Loren Melendrez Fuentes. She was a contractor who worked at the Shady Grove Transfer Station. My deepest condolences go out to her family, friends, and colleagues. This is a very difficult day. We made grief counselors available for station staff and others. The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection is a part of a big family of County workers, and we are all affected by this tragic loss."
