Jealous and Hogan ready to face off for Md. gov; Montgomery Co. Exec Dem primary too close to call

ROCKVILLE, Md. - Less than 500 hundred votes are all that separate the candidates in Tuesday's Montgomery County Executive Democratic primary in Maryland. Veteran Montgomery County council member Marc Elrich holds a slight advantage over businessman David Blair in the contest.

Absentee and provisional ballots in the race have yet to be counted. A computer error at the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration involving voter registration was expected to affect as many as 80,000 voters who were required to cast provisional ballots.

Former NAACP President Ben Jealous won the Democratic nomination for governor in Maryland setting up a battle between the liberal candidate and popular Republican incumbent, Governor Larry Hogan.

Jealous beat Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker and now has a shot at becoming the state's first black governor and the country's third elected black governor.

Jealous supports tuition-free college educations and expanding Medicare to all. He also advocates raising teacher pay by 29 percent and funding full-day, universal pre-kindergarten with tax revenue from his proposal to legalize recreational marijuana. He was backed by Senator Bernie Sanders.

Hogan hopes to become the first Republican Governor to win reelection in Maryland in over 60 years.

Top Maryland prosecutor Angela Alsobrooks won the Democratic primary for Prince George's County Executive Tuesday night. Alsobrooks is vying to fill Baker's seat. She defeated Representative Donna Edwards and State Senator Anthony Muse and will face Republican Jerry Mathis in November.
