Minnieland Academy in Bristow to close due to decreased enrollment following sex abuse arrest

BRISTOW, Va. - Minnieland Academy's Bristow location will be shutting down its operations later this month following a child sex abuse case involving one of its employees.

In a letter sent home to parents by the day care last month, which was obtained by FOX 5, Minnieland Academy said in part, "Despite our desire to continue offering service at the school, our enrollment has decreased to the level where we cannot offer programs that meet our curriculum and student socialization standards. For this reason, we have decided to provide you with this thirty day notice that classroom operations at our Bristow school will cease effective Friday, June 15."

The closure comes after Taylor Boykin, an assistant teacher at the Bristow location, was arrested in April after authorities said he sexually assaulted four children under 5 years old at the day care.

Boykin was charged with four counts of aggravated sexual battery, four counts of object sexual penetration, and four counts of indecent liberties by a custodian.

Prince William County police say the investigation began when a 5-year-old girl reported to a parent that she had been inappropriately touched by Boykin. The parent then reported the incident to Child Protective Services, which began an investigation with police.

Court records show the first offense took place more than a year ago on March 26, 2017.

Parents have been upset with the way Minnieland Academy has handled with the fallout of this scandal. Boykin was arrested on April 20, but some parents said they did not learn of the arrest until the following week after the media reported about it.

The Bristow location was raided by authorities in May. Officers in unmarked vehicles were seen carrying a few computers and brown paper bags full of materials from the day care.
